About Jabiru Community College

Zillmere, North Brisbane

Jabiru Community College (JCC) is a small, independent school dedicated to offering a flexible, inclusive, and personalised education experience. It serves young people in Years 10-12 who have become disenfranchised from mainstream education, offering them a supportive and nurturing environment. Rooted in the Big Picture Education framework, JCC provides personalised learning plans to engage students in real-world experiences and essential life skills.

JCC is committed to learning how to incorporate First Nations ways of knowing, learning and being, and to addressing racism and the impacts of ongoing colonial practices in our broader community. The school also works to create a safe environment for the LGBTQIA+Sistergirl & Brotherboy community (from here referred to as the Queer community).

The dedicated educators at JCC are passionate about creating a child safe and child friendly environment where all children and young people are valued and safe. Our learning is driven by curiosity, expanded through reflection, and maintained through perseverance.  We believe that powerful, transferable learning happens when learners are enabled to explore their passions and interests with others, and develop their personal agency.

The school's mission is guided by five principles: Respect, Relationships, Responsibilities, Rights, and Reflection (the 5 Rs). These values support learning, conflict resolution, and the recognition of individual rights and responsibilities.

Student Centred Learning Design - Big Picture Education

Jabiru is committed to cultivating a school which offers flexible, personalised learning in a community of lifelong learners. We enact the principle of student centred learning through implementation of the Big Picture Design for Learning, which includes a focus on engaging student interest, authentic learning and assessment experiences (within and outside the school), reflection and collaboration.

Post Structuralism

We enact the principles of post-structural human service practice through narrative and solutions focused approaches, and an appreciation of multiple perspectives. Through our practice approach, we help to build student agency and voice.

Community Building and Inclusion

Jabiru is committed to building a safe, radically inclusive community where all can learn, participate and belong. We recognise the potential for community belonging to be a catalyst for personal and social change and justice. We commit to community building actions towards becoming a safe inclusive community. These actions include listening across difference, sharing power, and encouraging accountability and conflict resolution.

Transdisciplinary practice

Transdisciplinary Practice at JCC asks us to commit to sharing with and learning from colleagues from different disciplines and lived experiences. We believe that better decision making and practice comes when we share our experience, are aware of and listen to multiple perspectives, and work together to find ways forward.
